Lily felt simultaneously fearful and victorious as she entered the kitchen. What had she done? Was her relationship with Adam up the creek, out the window, gone? But what if it was? She was always putting up with his conditions. It wasn't working for her anymore, so she had to change it. But life without Adam...?

"What was that all about?" Myrine asked over the din of Diana's practice session. A single refrain was being repeated over and over again with the insistence of a child learning a new instrument--and just as insufferable. From the house the words sounded like, "And for lovers, I don't need men." That didn't sound like Diana. Myrine wondered what she was really singing.

"We were arguing about whether Adam was mad or not," Lily said, and let out a huge peal of laughter.
