A single yellow rose.

Travis had given it to Mercy when they went on the outing to the lake that bore his name. The rose was all she had taken from him. It didn't get him into her bed (an undertaking which would have been difficult with her visiting her parents and encumbered by two small children), but it kept him in her thoughts, and that was probably worse than what George feared. Mercy had laughed about the rose at the time, but it stayed with her long after she'd thrown it away. It demonstrated interest, effort, and appreciation. If George had understood the use of such gestures, it just might have helped to keep love alive, but he was above giving roses.
