Next to Lyssa, Marty looked rather like a wimp, but a winning wimp. Marty was impressive in his own way. Lyssa was his boss, after all--a circumstance which would kill any glimmering of erotic attraction in the average male, of the American variety at least. Men have a tendency to choose helpmates (otherwise known as household drudges) as partners; the natural state of affairs for them is to be paired up hierarchically, with the man on top. It is common knowledge that the male ego needs stroking, and it is the job of the woman who stands in the wings to provide it. (The female ego may well need stroking too, but that is not common knowledge.) Conventional wisdom would dictate that Lyssa choose a man of equal or higher status rather than her own employee, but conventional wisdom is frequently insufficient for unconventional women.
